Former Home for Dr & Mrs Garnett Nel

161 High Street is a fine example of the sandstone homes built during the two Ostrich Feather Booms between 1880 and 1914. This attractive late-Victorian residence typically has a verandah affording protection from the harsh sun of the Klein Karoo summers. The curvilinear roof sheeting rests upon decorative timber posts that are painted in a contrasting colour. The sandstone has been dressed and "rusticated" with prominent pointing between the large stones.

This house was for many years occupied by Dr Garnett and Mrs Irene Nel, both prominent and greatly beloved residents of Oudtshoorn.
